Scarlett Josse Hanley was born in Liverpool, England, in 1991. Having studied Fashion Design & Marketing at LCF, and worked in the fashion industry, there is a thread of appreciation for colour, pattern and materials that has been brought to her practice from her first career.

Her work has evolved from fashion illustration to a contemporary fine art practice of drawing, painting and printmaking were Scarlett approaches her work with no set hierarchy of materials. She delicately draws and paints on paper, canvas and boards whilst incorporating small details and embellishments. Her work focuses on portraiture but also explores the natural world and all its intricacies.

Scarlett’s influences include literary characters, scenes in books or films, poems and music. Sudden and brief moments between people, physical displays of emotion and the thought provoking inspire her work. The direction is one that is whimsical in approach, yet each piece is full of an existent meaning grounded in the experiences we can all relate to.

Scarlett has lived and worked in London for over 10 years and is also a teacher of art at Hampstead School of Art.
